film house performance

a squirrel dared a tightrope
telephone wire
brownstone to brownstone
in a blizzard of snow
and rolling cars
i thought it was incredible
better than the circus
but i suppose squirrels
do that sort of thing
all of the time
i was on my way to a film house
they told me i'd get in for free
if i played a few dylan covers
they were doing a screening of
the latest documentary
a new one seems to come out
every couple of months now
all about bob dylan
they gave me free beer and cheese
and a microphone
the beer and cheese was free for everyone.
by the time i played, most of us
were no longer sober
and happy to be there
so i did my thing and we filed in
there was an excited mix
of intoxicated dylan dreamers
and that youthful giddiness
of being next to strangers
in a dark room with a big screen
big ideas
i couldn't tell then
if i had had too much to drink
but it seemed to me
like we all blended in
with the crowd on the screen
looking up at the stage
searching for something
that most of us will never find
